Grooming Awareness: Recognizing & Protecting Against Exploitation
Learn the warning signs of online grooming and practical steps to protect children from predatory behavior.
What Is Grooming?
Grooming is the process used by predators to gain a child's trust with the goal of exploitation. It typically happens online but can begin in person.
The Grooming Process
Stage 1: Building Trust
The predator establishes a relationship, shows interest in the child's life, and builds emotional connection.
Stage 2: Filling a Need
They identify emotional needs and position themselves as meeting those needs—providing attention, validation, or gifts.
Stage 3: Isolating
The predator works to isolate the child from protective figures and move communication to private platforms.
Stage 4: Desensitizing
Sexual content is gradually introduced, normalized, and normalized further with each conversation.
Stage 5: Exploitation
The predator requests sexual images, video chats, or in-person meetings.
